Christmas Stockings
Stockings are Christmas gift receptacles, especially for children. Kids are
told that if they hang their stocking on fireplace mantles or Christmas trees,
Santa Claus would come and put gifts in it when they are asleep. Whether they
believe in Santa’s existence or not, they hang their stockings dutifully. And
they know that they will find their quota of gifts, because parents put gifts
inside the stockings to help them believe in the concept of Santa Claus.
History of the Christmas Stockings Tradition
The beginning of the Christmas stockings tradition is traced to the 3rd century.
St. Nicholas, who was then the bishop of the town Myra, (the present name of
Myra is Demre, and it is in Turkey) is believed to be the originator of the
tradition. He had filled the stockings of three girls with gold coins because
their father did not have the money for their dowry. St. Nicholas is believed
to have thrown the gold down through the chimney into the stockings that the
girls had hung above the fireplace to dry, and that is why people still hang
stockings on the fireplace mantle.

Parents take care to fill up the stockings that their kids hang, to go along with the myth of Santa Claus, and just for the satisfaction of giving gifts to their little ones and seeing them happy. In olden days, gift-wrapped oranges were the most common gift that found its way into the stockings. Later the variety of the gifts increased, and nuts, chocolates, and pens filled stockings as presents. Nowadays the range and scope of gifts has increased so much that it is not possible to put it all into a stocking. Now presents are gift-wrapped and left underneath the Christmas tree, often leaving a token gift of a chocolate or lollipop inside the stocking. Some people, however, try to use large stockings and keep up the convention.
